Christine Thomas, Ph.D., RN, CHSE-A, is a trailblazer in nursing education, renowned for her pioneering work in simulation-based learning. With 37 years of nursing experience and 30 years as a nurse educator, Dr. Thomas brings a wealth of expertise to her role as the director of simulation and experiential learning at the GW School of Nursing.

Her journey into nursing simulation began when she brought her clinical students into the nursing lab, where she witnessed firsthand the transformative power of hands-on learning experiences. Recognizing the limitations of traditional clinical education, Dr. Thomas embraced simulation as a means to empower students to actively engage in patient care scenarios without compromising safety. Through simulation, students could apply theoretical knowledge, hone critical thinking skills, and develop confidence in their abilities—all within a controlled and supportive environment.

Driven by a passion for innovation, Dr. Thomas has dedicated herself to advancing nursing education through simulation. One of her top priorities is to tailor simulation experiences to meet the individual needs of students, recognizing that each learner brings a unique set of strengths and challenges. “By scaffolding learning experiences and providing opportunities for reflection and feedback, we can foster a supportive learning environment where students can thrive and grow into competent and confident nurses,” said Dr. Thomas.

"With the shift towards competency-based education, simulation will play an increasingly integral role in preparing the next generation of nurses for the complexities of modern healthcare. Strategic use of simulation, coupled with emerging technologies, will be key to meeting the evolving needs of nursing education."

As a mentor to fellow faculty members, Dr. Thomas champions the integration of simulation into curricula and facilitates the adoption of new technologies. She understands that embracing change can be daunting, but believes that with the right guidance and support, faculty can harness the full potential of simulation to enhance teaching and learning outcomes.

“I envision a bright, yet challenging, landscape for nursing simulation,” said Dr. Thomas. “With the shift towards competency-based education, simulation will play an increasingly integral role in preparing the next generation of nurses for the complexities of modern healthcare. Strategic use of simulation, coupled with emerging technologies, will be key to meeting the evolving needs of nursing education.”

In her role at GW Nursing, Dr. Thomas is excited to join a community that shares her passion for innovation and excellence in nursing education. She is inspired by the state-of-the-art simulation infrastructure and resources available at GW Nursing, and looks forward to leading the simulation team in their mission to transform nursing education.

Dr. Christine Thomas stands as a strong advocate for nursing simulation, dedicated to revolutionizing the way nurses are trained and educated. Through her commitment to student-centered learning, mentorship, and technological innovation, she continues to shape the future of nursing education for generations to come.
