GW Alumni Spotlight: Julie Gibbons, PhD, MPH, MSN, BSN

The George Washington University School of Nursing proudly celebrates the achievements of alumna Dr. Julie Gibbons (PhD in Nursing, 2025), who has been appointed as a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She will officially begin her new role on August 11, 2025.

UNC Charlotte recently achieved the prestigious R1 research designation from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education—recognition reserved for top-tier research institutions. Dr. Gibbons’ appointment is a testament to her outstanding scholarship and contributions to the nursing profession.

While at GW, Dr. Gibbons distinguished herself through impactful research focused on the well-being of school nurses. Her dissertation, “Workplace Factors and School Nurses’ Well-being,” examined how organizational environments affect the psychological health of school nurses—a timely and critical area of study in nursing and public health.

Reflecting on her doctoral journey, Dr. Gibbons shared:

“I am forever grateful to all the GW Nursing doctoral faculty—particularly my dissertation committee: Dr. Sherrie Flynt Wallington, my chair; and Drs. Christine Pintz, Adriana Glenn, and Olga Acosta Price from the GW Milken Institute School of Public Health, as well as Dr. Erin Maughan from George Mason University. The program, coursework, mentorship, and the support of my peers have all helped prepare me for this next chapter.”

The GW School of Nursing community extends heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Gibbons on this exciting new opportunity and is proud to count her among our distinguished alumni who are helping to revolutionize healthcare by making a meaningful impact in nursing education, research, and practice.
