Center for Global and Community Initiatives

GW Nursing’s Global Center strives to improve health equity throughout our communities and the world by creating strategic relationships with organizations that serve communities in need of our health expertise. Our students and faculty provide hours of clinical service in Washington, D.C. and on global missions throughout the world.

We provide our students with opportunities to serve internationally, which teaches the scope of health issues people face. Our faculty teach and conduct research with an eye to health issues and priorities of each community they serve. GW Nursing experts are also available to consult on issues of clinical practice and health policy with educational organizations, NGOs and health care providers worldwide.

Community Engagement

Clinical and public health experiences are available to students interested in community health closer to home. These opportunities include a weeklong summer camp in rural Virginia, transgender communities in Washington, D.C. and hospitals throughout D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

Faculty are engaged in scholarship and research aimed at bettering the health of individuals and communities.

Global Opportunities

At GW Nursing, we believe including a global perspective is key to providing comprehensive nursing education. Students can access global academic opportunities through weeklong service-oriented learning experiences in Costa Rica, Ecuador, Haiti and Uganda. These competitive academic opportunities have set course objectives and expectations.

Advanced Nursing Education

GW Nursing has been awarded a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration to enhance the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program. With this grant, we will expand our distance education offerings to better serve nurses working and living in underserved communities. These offerings will be supplemented by additional technology resources such as web conferencing and online learning for DNP students. Ultimately, this initiative will prepare graduates as nurse practitioners or nursing administrators in diverse settings.

Teaching and Transforming through Technology

Our Teaching and Transforming through Technology (T3) program works to increase access to and enhance the quality of nursing education by integrating technology-based and online teaching strategies. This effort, funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration, is transforming traditional face-to-face instruction into a more advanced and flexible blended learning format.

This program will allow us to better target students to develop a culturally competent, diverse nursing workforce to address the overall needs of a growing workforce and a specific need for nurses in rural areas. Our goal is to build a nursing workforce fluent in the use of teaching and learning technologies to support patient education and communication in care delivery, with the foundational skills needed to seek out, adopt and adapt to emerging health information technologies.

"One of my long-term goals is to work in Haiti as a health care professional. This trip was the perfect opportunity to get a taste of what it’s like to be in Haiti in a professional capacity."
