GW SON SAIL Center Practice Lab Policy

Policy Statement 

The GW School of Nursing has established a laboratory space for student practice, located in Innovation Hall, room 206A. The practice lab is for enrolled GW SON students to apply what they have learned and to improve skills.

Reason for Policy 

This policy is intended to provide information for the use of the practice lab to ensure an equitable and safe learning environment.

Who is Governed by this Policy 

All students enrolled in the ABSN and graduate programs at the GW School of Nursing.

Policy 

The simulation practice lab, located on the second floor of Innovation hall, 206A, is available to GW SON Students for practice of psychomotor skills. The simulation practice lab is equipped with task trainers to support practicing skills. The task trainers are specifically for the simulation practice lab and not intended to be utilized for classroom, simulation activities, or outside course activities. 

The simulation practice lab will only be accessible via GWorld card from the main hallway. Students are not permitted to access the simulation space or enter the simulation practice lab through the main simulation space. 

All food and drink are strictly prohibited in the simulation practice lab.

Definitions 

Task Trainer – A device designed to train in just the key elements of the procedure or skill being learned. (Lioce, L. Downing, Chang, Robertson, Anderson, Diaz, & Spain (2020).

Procedures 

The practice lab is not supervised by staff or faculty, therefore the following guidelines are in place for students:

  • Students should follow posted directions on the use of each task trainer to assist with that skill.
  • Availability of the space is on a first come – first serve basis. Students are to use discretion in regards to the number of students using the lab at one time and the amount of time spent in the lab. It is assumed that students will respect each other’s time and space.
  • Faculty and staff are not responsible for any accidents or injuries that may occur in the practice lab.
  • If you are injured or need emergency assistance, please contact GW Security immediately. After the incident, please ask for an appointment to review the event with the Director of Simulation and Experiential Learning at sonsimlabatgwu [dot] edu Task trainers and supplies are subject to availability. To request additional equipment and supplies, please send a request to sonsimlabatgwu [dot] edu. Please allow 48 hours for a response during the work week

  • Students are expected to leave the practice lab in a clean and orderly manner. All trash should be disposed of properly. Task trainers and tables should be wiped with Super Sani clothes after use. Super Sani Cloths are to be disposed of in the appropriate receptacles. Misconduct can result in limited access to the practice lab.

Forms/Related Information

The Practice Lab is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It will be closed when GW University is closed. (e.g., inclement weather and over the holiday season).
